    Generate Functions:

    Write the area A of the rectangle as as function of the length of the rectangle.
    1. A wire 10 meters long is to be cut into two pieces. One piece is bent into a square and the other into a circle. Write the total area as a function of the length of the piece that is bent into a square.

    2.Inscribe a right circular cylinder of height h and radius r in a sphere of radius R. Write the volume V of the cylinder as a function of h.

    3.Water is poured into a container in the shape of a right circular cone with radius 4 feet and height 16 feet. Write the volume V of the water in the cone as a function of the height h of the water.

    4. Show that the largest (with maximum area) rectangle with a fixed perimeter 100 feet must be a square of side 25 feet.

    A = L(100 ft - 2L)/2, L measured in ft

    Solve dA(L)/dL = 0

  3. Use the pythagorean theorem on R,r, and h/2 to get r in terms of R and
    h. Substitute into the volume formula for a cylinder.
    Use similar triangles to get a relationship between h and the radius
    at that height. Substitute into the volume formula for a cone.
