I say basic mathematics covers grades k-5.
In your opinion, is middle school math basic?
What about high school math? What about remedial courses?

While the Elementary School curriculum is devoted to the basics of simple arithmetic.
Basic math concepts for Middle School is recommended for middle school students with weak math skills. It presents the lesson material on a 5th grade level. This course covers basic math operations with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, and introduces algebraic expressions.
Middle School students cover math topics related to algebra, geometry and statistics, subjects more complex than elementary math.
High School is more complex than Middle School math. Students must learn to navigate an increasingly complex world with solid problem-solving skills, and mathematics will prepare them for the 21st century.

Remedial classes are courses that may be required for students to build up their skills in math, reading, or English before they are allowed to take regular college courses.=>students with weak math skills

I failed the MAT, RAT, and WAT in 1986 prior to the Fall semester at NYC Technical College. I was placed in remedial Reading, Writing, and Math. I then took the WAT, RAT and MAT again.

I passed the WAT AND MAT on the second try but failed the RAT several more times before finally passing. The passing score on the RAT was 29/40 correct. I forgot my passing grade but it was enough to finally put remedial reading to the side and move into credit courses. Sad, right? I have a high school diploma but couldn't pass the college entrance exams.

here a high school diploma is not a guaranty to pass the college entrance exams
depends what subject did you take, did you take any honor or AP classes?

A high school diploma means the basics should not be a problem. The CUNY entrance exams are not hard to pass. Like any standardized exam, time is the main issue.
