I am afraid that you and mathlover1 are both misreading the problem! The problem specifically said that a and b must both be irrational numbers! 3 and 4 are of course rational. An example of two irrattional numbers whose some is rational is are a= sqrt{3} and b= -\sqrt{3}. Another example is 5+ 3sqrt{7} and 8- 3sqrt{7}.
