Let m = amount of money the company spends on employee wages and benefits.

Employee & wages : all other operational costs of a business

    This leads to 2 : 3, respectively.

    2m + 3m = 130,000

    Yes?

Since the ratio of wages and benefits to other costs is 2:3, the amount of money spent on wages and benefits is 2/5 of the business’s total expenditure. 2/5 *$130,000 = $52,000.

    Mira,

    1. The fraction 2/5 is not given anywhere in the problem.

    2. What information led you to select 2/5 as the correct fraction to multiply by 130,000?

    3. I know that a ratio is a fraction.
    My reasoning is 2 : 3 = 2 to 3 = 2/3.
Why 2/3 not the correct fraction?

    4. What information led you to multiply 130,000 by 2/5?

    5. I multiplied 2/3 (130,000) and got 26,000. Why is this the wrong approach?
