Intuitive Definition of a Limit

    I understand the intuitive definition of a limit as the limit of a given function as x tends to a number is equal to L.

    What does L mean here?
    I know the lim = limit. Does L = limit, too?

    as x “approaches” a, the function f( x) “approaches” the real number L

    Are you saying that L means the real number not the limit.
