For x^3- 2x^2 - 3x = 0, I can factor out x.
x(x^2 - 2x - 3) = 0
I set each factor to 0.
The first is just x = 0.
The second factor becomes (x - 3)(x + 1).
Setting each factor to 0, I get x = -1, x = 3.
There are three zeros: x = -1, x = 0, x = 3.
The second problem is a 4th degree polynomial. What is the easiest way to solve for x? I say graphing is the easiest approach.
Is there a general formula, similar to the
quadratic formula, for solving any polynomial equation?
You say?
