    A 25-foot-long board is to be cut into two parts. The longer part is 1 foot more than twice the shortest part. How long is each part?

    Let me see.

    So, 25 divided into two parts = x and 25 - x.

    Let 25 - x = longer part.

    Agree? Can x also be set as the longer side?

    Set Up:

    25 - x = 1 + 2x

    Makes sense?

    correct

    you can set 25 - x = longer part
    also x can be set as the longer side

    Very good but like everything in math, questions will get increasingly harder.

    One part of the board has length x feet. The other part has length 2x+ 1.
    x+ 2x+ 1= 25
    3x+ 1= 25
    3x= 24
    x= 8. One board is 8 feet long, the other is 2(8)+ 1= 17 feet long.

    Notice that you replies never get a "Like" from me. Gee, I wonder what that means?
